Facebook's virtual-reality tech was not stolen, Zuckerberg testifies

By Lisa Maria Garza DALLAS (Reuters) - Facebook Inc Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg took the witness stand in Dallas federal court on Tuesday and denied an allegation by a rival company that the virtual-reality technology of Facebook's Oculus unit was stolen. Zuckerberg, wearing a dark suit and striped tie rather than his typical T-shirt and jeans, began testifying at 9 a.m. local time (1500 GMT) and 2 1/2 hours later was still answering questions posed by a lawyer for videogame publisher ZeniMax Media Inc. ZeniMax sued Oculus in 2014 as Facebook was in the process of buying the startup for $2 billion. The publisher said that Oculus unlawfully gained access to ZeniMax's intellectual property while developing the virtual-reality system that includes the Rift headset.

After pound's fall, Apple to hike British app store prices

Tech giant Apple is set to raise the prices of its apps in Britain by around 25 percent after the steep drop in sterling following Britain's vote to leave the European Union. Apps which currently cost British consumers 0.79 pounds ($0.97) will cost 0.99 pounds following the hike, which is set to take place over the next seven days. The move follows similar price rises in Apple hardware in September and October last year.

Samsung chief faces long day as South Korean court weighs arrest warrant

The head of South Korea's giant Samsung Group faces a long day in court on Wednesday as a judge decides whether he should be arrested for bribery in a corruption scandal that has engulfed President Park Geun-hye's administration. Investigators questioned Jay Y. Lee for 22 hours last week as a suspect in the scandal which led to parliament impeaching Park in December and throwing the country into crisis. The prosecutor's office has accused Lee, 48, of paying bribes totaling 43 billion won ($36.55 million) to organizations linked to Choi Soon-sil, a friend of the president who is at the center of the scandal, to secure the 2015 merger of two affiliates and cement his control of the family business.

Toshiba will sell a roughly 20 percent interest in the unit for about 200 billion yen-300 billion yen ($1.77 billion-$2.66 billion) while retaining a majority stake, the newspaper reported.

Facebook moves to head off tougher regulation in Germany

By Caroline Copley and Eric Auchard BERLIN/MUNICH (Reuters) - Facebook is stepping up efforts to head off tougher regulation by Germany, a fierce critic of the social media network operator, with top managers visiting Germany and saying they would do more to combat fake news and hate speech. Top German lawmakers are planning legislation this year to force Facebook to remove incitements to hate crimes from its web pages within 24 hours or face fines, a push that could force the social media giant to bear more responsibility for content posted by users. Facebook's COO Sheryl Sandberg visited Berlin on Sunday to meet with German government officials considering new regulations on Facebook, according to a Berlin-based source at a rival Internet company.

Blockchain could save investment banks up to $12 billion a year: Accenture

By Anna Irrera and Jemima Kelly NEW YORK/LONDON (Reuters) - Blockchain technology could help the world?s largest investment banks cut their infrastructure costs by between $8 to $12 billion a year by 2025, according to a report by Accenture. The report, published on Tuesday jointly with benchmarking firm McLagan - part of consultancy Aon Hewitt - is based on an analysis of cost data from eight of the world?s ten largest investment banks, and provides a rare concrete estimate of blockchain?s potential savings. Originally used to underpin digital currency bitcoin, blockchain is a distributed record of transactions, or other data, maintained by a network of computers on the internet without the need for approval from a central authority.

This iPhone case ensures you?re never without a phone charger
We all have that one friend who always has an inexplicably large number of charging cables on their person. To be honest, if you took time out of your day to read this blog post about an iPhone charging accessory, it may well be you. Well, good news, charging aficionados! An Indiegogo campaign has sprung into temporary life to provide you with a vision of a future where you're never more than a few inches from a certified iPhone Charging Solution, thanks to an overly large iPhone case that builds the Lightning cable and the wall block into the back. The EZ Charge Case is a bulky iPhone case that has a charging block and a 28" USB cable built into the back. When you want to charge, you pull the wall block out of the case, plug it in, and crouch near the outlet like an electrically-powered hobbit. There are technically two versions of the case: the $39 EZ Charge Case, which is exactly what I just described, and the $59 EZ Charge Case Pro, which is the same thing but with a 2,000mAh battery also built in. EZ Charge created the following chart to help you understand the difference, in case adding a battery was too complicated to follow: The EZ Charge Case is raising money on Indiegogo right now, with shipping somehow expected in March of this year. As always, buyer beware with crowdfunding projects, especially those with ambitious timelines. In this case, at least the project isn't aiming to make a flying wristwatch or change the laws of physics, so it's not unrealistic to expect success at some point in the distant future.

Your original iPhone won't work on AT&T anymore

Anyone still clinging onto the original iPhone got some bad news yesterday: AT&T announced that it shut down its 2G network on January 1st, 2017. The 2G shutdown has been planned for a few years at this point, and judging by the lack of outcry when the network stopped working over two weeks ago, it doesn?t seem to have had a huge impact in today?s world of 3G and LTE networks. AT&T notes that the 2G shut down will free up resources and spectrum bandwidth for the network to use for future rollouts of more advanced wireless solutions like 5G down the line, which is probably a good thing.
